Hiking along the Makiki Valley Trail on Oahu

The Makiki Valley Loop Trail near Waikiki on Oahu, Hawaii, offers a picturesque escape into lush forests just a short distance from the bustling tourist hub. The trail, approximately 4 miles in length, provides a serene experience with green surroundings, natural tree arches, and the soothing sound of running water. The trail starts at the Hawaii Nature Center in Makiki, accessible within a short drive or bus ride from Waikiki.ย

The trail encompasses several interconnected paths, including the Makiki Arboretum Trail, Kanealole Trail, Makiki Valley Trail, and Maunalaha Trail. I suggest a clockwise direction for the circular route to ensure a gradual ascent up the Kanealole Trail. The trail features an enchanted forest ambiance with vines, ferns, ancient trees, and wildflowers. A small waterfall halfway through the hike adds to the mystical atmosphere. The descent involves navigating a relatively steep section of ridge, requiring attention to footing. The trail concludes back at the Hawaii Nature Center, for a complete loop.
