The hike to Mount Aeneas is arguably the crown jewel of the basin, offering a challenging trek that rewards hikers with panoramic views of Glacier National Park, the Bob Marshall Wilderness, and the Flathead Valley. The trail, approximately 6 miles round trip with an elevation gain of 1,700 feet, is accessible from the Camp Misery Trailhead, aptly named not for the hike itself but for the rugged drive to reach it.
As you ascend, the trail weaves through lush lodgepole pine forests before opening up to reveal sweeping views of the valley below. The path then narrows and steepens, leading to a series of switchbacks that test your resolve. But it’s the encounters with local wildlife, particularly the mountain goats known to frequent the area, that add a layer of excitement to the adventure.
Classified as strenuous, the hike to Mount Aeneas is not for the faint of heart. The path can be steep and demanding, especially the mile of switchbacks near the ridge. However, the effort is well worth it. Hikers are rewarded with 360-degree views that are simply unmatched, offering a glimpse of Montana’s rugged beauty that stays with you long after the hike is over.
Before setting out, it’s crucial to come prepared. The Jewel Basin is bear-country, home to both black and grizzly bears. Hikers are advised to carry bear spray, make noise to avoid startling wildlife, and practice Leave No Trace principles to keep the wilderness pristine for future visitors. Checking trail conditions is also a must, as snow can cover the path well into the summer months, delaying access to the trail.
While Mount Aeneas may be a highlight, the Jewel Basin has much more to offer. With over 27 lakes and numerous trails ranging from easy to challenging, there’s something for every hiker. Whether you’re looking for a leisurely day hike or a multi-day backcountry adventure, you’ll find it here. From the remote Clayton Lake to the scenic Birch Lake Trail, each path offers its own unique experience, complete with wildflowers, berry bushes, and opportunities for wildlife viewing.
What sets the Jewel Basin apart is its ability to offer an off-grid experience that’s still accessible. Hikers can enjoy the solitude of nature without venturing too far from civilization. It’s a place where you can disconnect, recharge, and experience the raw beauty of Montana’s wilderness.
Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or someone looking to explore Montana’s wilderness for the first time, Mount Aeneas and the Jewel Basin await with open trails and unforgettable vistas. Remember to respect the wilderness, come prepared, and embrace the adventure that lies ahead.
