Enjoying spring on Pengelly Ridge of Mountain Sentinel

Enjoying spring on Pengelly Ridge of Mountain Sentinel admin April 19, 2021 Hiking The early season has been a blast with so many trails within close proximity of Missoula and at lower elevations (no more ice and snow). Yesterday, Vida RZ challenged us to the Pengelly Ridge route to the tippy-top of Mount Sentinel. The […]
It’s still winter(ish) up at Glen Lake, Bitterroot Mountains

It’s still winter(ish) up at Glen Lake, Bitterroot Mountains admin February 1, 2021 Hiking Seems like every year when the snow is finally coming off the high-country, we head up to Glen Lake, and its no-name sister lake high in the Bitterroot Mountains. The loop mostly travels among the skeletal remains of the Gash Creek […]
Hiking up Smokejumper’s Trail to the top of Mount Sentinel over Missoula

The perfect trail for a quick challenge with minimal travel (If you live in Missoula. If you live in Florida, it is a bit of a drive).
Trail Run to the Two Sisters

Let’s wade crotch-deep across the Bitterroot River and run up the ridge to the Two Sisters and above.
Trial Run up Blodgett Canyon, Montana

What do you do on a trail that you’ve hiked dozens of times? You trail run it, of course. Following the course of Blodgett Creek, the trail running is both great and, well, challenging at alternating stretches. Large rocks and uneven trail surface means that you best not gawk at the towering buttresses of granite that loom overhead.
Hiking to Bear Creek Falls during a Montana Winter

Not every spectacular hike requires hours or days of travel or many miles of hoofing it up a mountain. In fact, some of our favorite treks are just outside our front door in the Bitterroot Mountains. On this day, we hiked along Bear Creek to the eponymously named chasm that tumbles and rumbles a shade more than a mile and a half from the trailhead.
Into the Volcanic Heart: Craters of the Moon National Monument

Imagine square mile after square mile of rough, jagged áa lava and smooth and pillowy pahoehoe lava, and you are not in Hawaii…we’re in the middle of Idaho at The Craters of the Moon National Monument.
Winter Hiking in Glacier National Park to a frozen Fish Lake

Climbing from the get-go, the trail passes through an old-growth forest of red cedar, and western hemlock, which transitions to a dense spruce-fir forest as the trail ascends.
Winter Solstice Hike and Soak at Jerry Johnson Hot Springs

Winter Solstice, the turn to longer days is upon us, and we chose to hike along Warm Springs Creek in the Lochsa River country of Idaho to soak our buns in the warm waters of Jerry Johnson Hot Springs.
Winter Hike to Upper Bass Creek Falls

Before Christmas and before COVID, we made the 8-mile journey to the Upper Falls of Bass Creek in the Bitterroot Mountains with Dr. Vincent (our fav). While there was snow on the trail, it was not icy at all. The hike is relatively moderate with an overall elevation gain of a tad more than 1,800 feet. Upon arriving at the falls, it was a cascade of ice that Vida remarked that reminded her of the travertine terraces of Mammoth Hot Spring in Yellowstone National Park.
