Mountain Misfits

Getting to Costa Rica and Canyoneering Arenal

Costa Rica 2022
Can you believe it? The Mountain Misfits made it to Costa Rica for an amazing 2-week adventure that all started with a bang…a canyoneering trip that included the rappelling descent of 4 waterfalls including a 200-foot giant.
We started off with an overnight flight from Montana and ended up in San Jose the next morning.
After clearing Customs and running the gauntlet of taxi drivers and hustlers that station themselves outside the exit doors of the airport, we jumped into a shuttle with a driver who drove in a style that we would call either aggressive or moderately psychotic. He took every corner with Formula 1 gusto and passed whenever, and we mean whenever, possible.
Soon enough we found ourselves in La Fortuna, Spanish for “The Fortune”, and aptly named due to the fertile lands where it is located. Above the town looms Volcan Arenal, which until recently was still spewing lava from its several craters. In the center of town is a Catholic church that sits across from the small city park.

The trip all started with a short 4×4 journey in the back of a giant diesel truck that crept up a rocky road to the “ops center” where we were greeted by our guides Alejandro and Ronny, who were terrifically personable. We briefly went over safety and put on our equipment (I guess a tight harness against the boys is a good thing).

The next thing we knew, Vida was making her first rappel off a 65-foot waterfall face. Did we mention that she possesses a healthy fear of heights? And there she was mid-air on a rope with the words “Top bad, you paid for it” still lingering in the air. She may have uttered a few choice words, but in the end she was still feisty and kicking.

We jumped into pools, down-climbed the canyon walls and river boulders, and hiked up through the rainforest. We packed all kinds of adventure into this awesome canyoning waterfall rappelling for Desafio Adventure Company.
