Hiking to the Summit

The hike to Mount Aeneas is arguably the crown jewel of the basin, offering a challenging trek that rewards hikers with panoramic views of Glacier National Park, the Bob Marshall Wilderness, and the Flathead Valley. The trail, approximately 6 miles round trip with an elevation gain of 1,700 feet, is accessible from the Camp Misery Trailhead, aptly named not for the hike itself but for the rugged drive to reach it.

But it’s the encounters with local wildlife, particularly the mountain goats known to frequent the area, that add a layer of excitement to the adventure.

Preparing for Your Hike

Before setting out, it’s crucial to come prepared. The Jewel Basin is bear-country, home to both black and grizzly bears. Checking trail conditions is also a must, as snow can cover the path well into the summer months, delaying access to the trail.
